Jaguar driver tells cops he is visiting nan after transporting drugs to Scotland

A Jaguar driver told cops he was just visiting nan after transporting drugs to Scotland.

Kevin Keegan told officers he was on his way to Torquay to see family when he was busted with a kilo of cocaine in his car.

The 46-year-old, who has the same name as a football legend, had driven from his native Liverpool up to Scotland and then to Devon.

He was then pulled over and police discovered a street value of between £30,000 and £40,000 worth of drugs in his spare wheel, reports Devon Live.

Keegan was later jailed for five years after confessing to transporting drugs for suppliers.

The court was told he had been a law abiding and hard working man before hitting hard times during the Covid crisis.

"It's clear to me you did this for financial advantage," said the judge.

Prosecutor Ms Felicity Payne said just before 6pm on April 2 police stopped Keegan's car as it entered Devon.

They had been tracking the Jaguar since it left Merseyside earlier that day, drove to Scotland and then straight down to the South West on the M5.

Keegan told police at the roadside that he did not know anything about the package or a dealer's list found in the car.

"He gave an account he was visiting his nana in Torquay," said Ms Payne.

Police made checks and there was no one matching his grandmother's description at that address.

The defendant, of Renwell Road, Liverpool, has five previous convictions including being concerned in the supply of cannabis in 2011.

But Mr Stephen Nunn, defending, said since then he had been working and earning a good living as a vehicle delivery driver, but that work stopped during the health pandemic and Keegan broke his arm, which led to him becoming desperate for cash and made a wrong decision.

"He was approached by some close friend who said it was an easy way to make money," Mr Nunn said.

"He picked up a package in Scotland and was due to receive £500 plus mileage.

He took the offer and was caught red-handed," said Mr Nunn.

Keegan did not know precisely what he was transporting but knew it was worth a lot of money.
