Jags won’t play against Rams RB Cam Akers after Achilles tear

The Los Angeles Rams are set to host Jacksonville at SoFi Stadium on Dec. 5, but they’ll have to do it without one of their top offensive players. Rams starting running back Cam Akers was lost for the season with a torn Achilles on Monday. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the injury was sustained while Akers was training.

The Rams had high hopes for Akers in his second season after he took 145 carries for 625 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie in 2020. He appeared in 13 games last season and started five of them, looking strong down the stretch. The second-round pick out of Florida State also had 11 catches for 123 yards and a touchdown.

With Akers’ injury, third-year running back Darrell Henderson takes over the starting spot. In 11 starts last year, Henderson had 138 carries for 624 yards and five touchdowns. For depth, the team will look to Xavier Jones, who has never attempted a rush, and Jake Funk, a rookie seventh-round pick.

The Rams are expected to be a Super Bowl contender this year with Matthew Stafford acquired via trade this offseason, but they’ll have to do it without their top ball-carrier.
