Despite being an unlikely pairing, the Jacksonville Jaguars at least did their homework on Oklahoma quarterback and Heisman winner Kyler Murray. Per Peter King of NBC Sports, the team was one of 10 who met with Murray at the NFL combine this past week.
5. Murray met with 10 teams in Indianapolis, but I wouldn’t read a lot into that. The usual suspects were among the 10 teams—Arizona, Oakland, the Giants, Jacksonville, Miami and Washington. But he also met with Detroit, Seattle and the Chargers. Detroit. Hmmm. Seattle: probably just fact-finding. I’m not sure of the 10th team. But as I said, don’t read too much into that.
Murray, 21, was arguably the biggest topic of the draft and has been often mocked to the Jags because of their quarterback situation. However, as King points out, fans shouldn’t put too much into his meeting with the Jags because meeting with the top prospects of the combine is essentially what every team does.
Most will also point to the fact that the Jags are thought to be front-runners to land Nick Foles as the reason the Jags would pass on Murray, however, that’s not the biggest factor in him likely not being in black and teal this regular season. Instead, it’s more so about Tom Coughlin’s history with quarterbacks, and Murray (5-foot-10, 207) simply doesn’t have the measurables he looks for. That said, I wouldn’t completely rule out the Jags taking a quarterback in Round 1, but it probably would be a quarterback with traditional measuarbles — if at all.
Murray finished last season 216-of-306 (70.6 percent) for 3,674 passing yards, 37 touchdowns and seven interceptions. On the ground, he was able to electrify the nation with 853 yards for 11 touchdowns, which also played a role in his Heisman Trophy victory alongside his ability as a passer.
