As a result of their 20-0 loss to the Tennessee Titans, the Jacksonville Jaguars have been eliminated from playoff contention. Alongside the New York Jets, both were the latest teams to join the other mathematically eliminated teams in the Detroit Lions and Houston Texans.
This marks the fourth consecutive season in which the Jags will miss the postseason as their magical 2017 season was the last time they’ve been to the playoffs. Their loss to the Titans moved them to a 2-11 season overall and the best they can now do is register a six-win season.
While it’s just Year 1 for coach Urban Meyer and quarterback Trevor Lawrence and a rebuild was expected, many felt the improvement would be a bit more significant by now, but the team’s offense has been a big issue. Sure, injuries to DJ Chark, Jamal Agnew, Dan Arnold, and Travis Etienne haven’t helped, but the team has been anemic on the offensive side of the ball and hasn’t helped the defense much since the bye week.
The Jags’ last performance was proof of this as they only registered eight rushing yards and 192 yards overall. Lawrence struggled mightily in the process, throwing four picks while going 24-of-40 on the day.
Regardless of who is running the team heading forward, it’s clear the Jags won’t be able to do much winning to close the season if their offense doesn’t find a way to revive itself. It’s also clear that the team needs to emphasize the addition of talent on that side of the ball, too, in 2022 as the circumstances need to be improved around Lawrence if the playoffs are going to even be a thought.
