With A.J. Bouye and Jalen Ramsey in front of him, Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Tre Herndon probably wasn’t expecting to get much playing time at cornerback in 2019 but by the time the season ended he had 14 to his name. With him being under contract as an undrafted free-agent, that also helped his pockets as he benefited from the league’s performance-based pay program and the veteran pool, bringing in just over $532K from both combined.
Herndon, 24, is the Jags’ No. 1 cornerback on the outside and could be a key part of a rebuild if that’s what the Jags are veering towards. He was able to accumulate 42 tackles, 13 pass deflections, and three picks in 2019. According to Pro Football Focus, he registered a grade of 54.7 so there is plenty of room to improve and he showed the ability to maximize his potential late in the season.
Dating back to his rookie season, the Jags were always impressed with his playmaking ability and Doug Marrone in particular singled his play out throughout the preseasons of 2018-19. Now, with a key 2020 season coming up for Marrone, he’ll need Herndon to take another step as Ramsey and Bouye left some huge shoes to fill.
