Jags to pick up Jalen Ramsey’s fifth-year option

Though the Jacksonville Jaguars could extend cornerback Jalen Ramsey this year, that decision won’t be made in the next couple of months. According to the team’s general manager Dave Caldwell, the team will be picking up his fifth-year option (for 2020) instead and will make a decision on extending him (and Yannick Ngakoue) afterward.

Ramsey, 24, is the team’s franchise player and is expected to be the league’s highest-paid cornerback once his deal is eventually done. That said, it appears the team simply would like to see where their cap situation is after they take care of their current needs as Caldwell added that the Jags could be as aggressive as they like in free agency and the draft. Once that’s done, they can then focus their time and available money on long-term deals for Ramsey and Ngakoue, both of whom won’t come cheap.

The news of Ramsey’s future should somewhat calm fans after Adam Schefter reported that he was told by a league executive that he believed the team would “absolutely” consider trading the young corner this offseason. However, until a deal is officially done, some fans will still have questions though we tend to think the Jags trading Ramsey is highly unlikely.

Ramsey finished 2018 with 65 tackles, 13 pass breakups and three interceptions. He was also named to his second consecutive Pro Bowl last season after being voted into the annual game and being named to the Associated Press’ All-Pro team in 2017.
