Jags sign Jimmy Smith’s son, Trey Smith, to an undrafted contract

It’s a great time to be a fan of the Jacksonville Jaguars as several exciting events will take place this week. Later today, the team will be revealing its preseason and regular season schedule, and then on Friday, the team will start their rookie minicamp.

We’ve already discussed the seven draft picks who will take the field Friday, as well as the various undrafted free agents that will, too, but it appears one more interesting name will be joining the rookie class. That player is Wyoming running back Trey Smith, who is the son of Jags great Jimmy Smith.

Wyoming’s football program confirmed the news Thursday afternoon on their Twitter account after both Trey and Jimmy did earlier.

Smith, 26, started his college career with Louisville in 2016 and left the program after the 2018 season. He then joined Wyoming as a graduate transfer in 2019 and entered the draft this offseason. In 18 games played with the Cowboys, he garnered 141 carries for 729 rushing yards and eight touchdowns.

Smith will join the Jags’ roster that has plenty of depth at the running back position behind James Robinson and Travis Etienne. The team selected a running back in the fifth round in Ole Miss rusher Snoop Conner and they have Ryquell Armstead, Mekhi Sargent, and Nathan Cottrell on the roster, too.

When Smith takes the field on Friday, he will at least have one recognizable face out there with him in former Wyoming linebacker Chad Muma. The Jags drafted him in Round 3 of last month’s draft after he was regarded as one of the top linebackers in the whole nation.
