Jags release veteran RB Alfred Blue from injured reserve

Most believe the Jacksonville Jaguars will take a certain Super Bowl MVP named Nick Foles off injured reserve later down the road, however, fellow 2019 free-agent acquisition, Alfred Blue, won’t be joining him. The team announced that they would be releasing the veteran running back Monday, leaving them with a total of 12 players on injured reserve currently.

Blue, 28, was signed by the Jags in April to come in and provide depth for the team behind Leonard Fournette. Unfortunately, he sprained his ankle in the Jags’ Week 2 preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles when defensive lineman Vinny Curry inadvertently rolled his ankle underneath him while tackling the veteran running back. That put Blue in a situation where he wasn’t quite ready to go when the regular season came, so the Jags elected to put him on injured reserve.

Blue became eligible to practice the week of the Jags’ game against the New Orleans Saints, which marked the six-week mark in which he could rejoin the team as a practice participant. This week marked the nine-week mark in which he could be placed back on the main roster, however, it appears the Jags are fine with what’s currently behind Fournette (who rarely comes off the field) in rookie Ryquell Armstead, Tyler Ervin, and Devine Ozigbo.

Before coming to Jacksonville, Blue spent several years with the Houston Texans. He’ll enter free agency with a career total of 673 carries for 2,407 yards and eight touchdowns.
