Jags not projected to be awarded compensatory picks for 2020 draft

The Jacksonville Jaguars haven’t received a compensatory pick since 2010, and it’s now looking like that trend won’t come to an end in 2020. According to the recent projections done by Over the Cap, the Jags aren’t expected to receive any compensatory picks next season. The news comes after last Tuesday marked the deadline for any of the team’s additions or subtractions to be calculated into the league’s draft compensation formula.

It’s not a shocker that the Jags weren’t able to land any compensatory picks because none of the free-agents they let hit the open market signed top-tier deals. When looking at Over the Cap’s compensatory cancellation chart, the small deals in which offensive tackle Ereck Flowers, receiver Donte Moncrief and tailback T.J. Yeldon signed were voided out by the additions of receiver Chris Conley, tight end Geoff Swaim and linebacker Jake Ryan. Then their late additions of tailbacks Alfred Blue and Benny Cunningham alongside several others which basically put the Jags in a position where their additions outweighed their subtractions.

Of course, the biggest factor in the Jags’ not receiving compensation was the massive free-agent contract they gave to quarterback Nick Foles, which consisted of the highest average salary per year of any player on the market. As a result, the Philadelphia Eagles are projected to land a third-round compensatory pick after losing the veteran and several other notable players.

Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell has been a big spender since running the Jags front office, and the trend really hasn’t changed since Tom Coughlin came into the mix. However, they were able to land one of the Los Angeles Rams’ compensatory picks this year (No. 98) after trading them Dante Fowler Jr. They used that selection to take linebacker Quincy Williams out of Murray State, who will compete for their starting weak-side linebacker job.
