Jags load up on defense in Draft Wire 3-round mock

The Jacksonville Jaguars may be on their bye week, but fans can bet their bottom dollar that their scouting department is hard at work. The same can be said about our comrade Luke Easterling at Draft Wire, too, who released a new three-round mock on Friday. In it, the Jags came away with a nice group addressing some important positions and several needs that fans have been vocal about.

In the first-round, the Jags took a luxury pick with their original selection by going with Clemson receiver Tee Higgins to help out Nick Foles on the outside. Afterward, they addressed a top need with the selection the Los Angeles Rams gave them for cornerback Jalen Ramsey by finding a cornerback to potentially fill his void in Stanford’s Paulson Adebo.

At 6-foot-4, 216 pounds, Higgins is a player who has given college defensive backs issues with his long frame. He’s provided Trevor Lawrence with a target who is successful even when it appears he’s covered, and he’s a player who Foles could see as comparable to Alshon Jeffery, who was his favorite target in Philly.
Adebo, on the other hand, is a player who Daniel Griffis has written a breakdown on. At 6-foot-1, 184 pounds, he’s a scrappy defender who has fluid hips and the skills to go up with receivers and prevent high-point catches. The reason for that is likely because he was a former receiver and understands the opposition well.
In the second and third rounds, the Jags continued to add to their defense by selecting Auburn defensive tackle Nick Coe and and Oregon linebacker Troy Dye.

At 6-foot-5, 219 pounds, Coe is a player who can play on the edge and on the outside, which makes him a great fit for the Jags, who may need to find a successor for Calais Campbell down the road. The Jags could also be parting ways with defensive tackle Marcell Dareus in 2019, which could point to Taven Bryan being moved into a starting role with the reserve role behind him becoming vacant.

As for the 6-foot-4, 225 pound Dye, he’s a player who could provide the Jags with a long-term answer at weak-side linebacker. Like Telvin Smith was, he’s a rangy player, but he may be better in coverage. However, the problem with his selection is the fact that the Jags have Quincy Williams waiting to develop at the position, and I personally believe the pick may have been better served on the guard, tight end or safety positions.
