Jags have fourth-youngest roster in football in 2021

The amount of cap space the Jacksonville Jaguars had to work with this offseason is demonstrative of how their roster is currently built. Jacksonville had very few experienced veterans with large contracts on the books. Rather, much of their starting 22 (as well as their depth) is comprised of players still playing on their rookie deals.

The guys the Jaguars have signed to longer-term deals, such as Myles Jack and new addition Shaquill Griffin, are all relatively young as well. As a result, Jacksonville’s roster is among the youngest in football currently — the fourth-youngest, to be exact.

Jacksonville’s average age sits at just 24.8, behind only the Los Angeles Rams, Carolina Panthers and Minnesota Vikings. The oldest player on the Jags roster is 2021 free-agent acquisition Marvin Jones Jr., and the accomplished receiver is only 31.

In total, there are only four other players on Jacksonville’s roster currently over the age of 30: Tyler Shatley, Lerentee McCray, Josh Lambo and Carlos Hyde. It’s worth noting, however, that if the Jaguars choose to bring on Tim Tebow as a tight end as has been reported, he will become the oldest player on the roster at age 33.

Still, it’s a bit stunning how much of this team is comprised of youth. The 2020 season was a disappointing one no matter how you slice it, but Jacksonville is far from devoid of talent. If some of these young players develop now that there’s a franchise quarterback in place, the team could improve very quickly.
