Jags claim former Bucs LB Chapelle Russell off waivers

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ season may be over, but the team has continued to look for players to help them in 2021. On Monday, they tried their hand with the waiver wire and ended up with former Tampa Bay Bucs linebacker Chapelle Russell.

Russell, 23, was a seventh round selection in last year’s draft (No. 241 overall) out of Temple. He spent the first five weeks of the regular season on their practice squad, but was promoted to the active roster on Oct. 13. From that point, he participated in the remainder of Tampa’s games, registering three snaps on defense and 109 on special teams.

While at Temple, Russell was able to accumulate 237 tackles, nine pass breakups, six fumble recoveries, three forced fumbles and three sacks while participating in 45 games. In 2018, he led the NCAA in fumble recoveries, accumulating five along with 70 tackles.

With the Jags out of the postseason, Russell will be rewarded to them after the Super Bowl, which will take place on Feb. 7.
