Jags assistant David Merritt heading to Chiefs, joins Steve Spagnuolo as DBs coach

Just a few weeks after completing their coaching staff, the Jacksonville Jaguars will have to re-fill one of their assistant spots as assistant defensive line coach David Merritt will be joining his old friend Steve Spagnuolo to be a defensive backs coach with the Kansas City Chiefs. Doug Marrone had recently brought him on in January with several other hires, however, due to coaching defensive backs for most of his career, it appears he was looking for a job where he could coach the position he specializes in.

Merritt also coached with Jags football operations executive Tom Coughlin for 13 years as a secondary/safeties coach while with the New York Giants and was on the staff for both of their recent Super Bowl win. Additionally, he coach with Jags head coach Doug Marrone while serving as a secondary and linebackers coach with the New York Jets from 2002-03.

Now, Merritt will be given the opportunity to work with safety Eric Berry and cornerback Kendall Fuller as the Chiefs try to continue to establish themselves as one of the AFC’s top teams. According to Pro Football Focus, the unit finished the regular season as the No. 17 ranked secondary, so there is a ton of work for Merritt to do with the young group.
