'Jaffa Jaffa give us a wave': Liverpool supporters share memories of legendary fan left homeless

Liverpool football fans have shared fond memories of a 'legend of the Kop' who has been sleeping in a pub garden for a year after falling on hard times.

Well-known Stephen Campbell, better known by his nickname "Jaffa" because of his ginger hair, ended up on the streets in April last year when he was unable to pay for his rent and monthly bills.

Over the last year the keen runner, 57, in Litherland .

But the pub landlord is set to leave in the week before Christmas, making Jaffa's future uncertain.

In response friends set up a donation page for Jaffa so he can find somewhere to live through the cold and wet winter months.

Both , with a whopping £8,000 raised in just three days.

After hearing of his situation many well-wishers shared fond memories of Jaffa, described as a 'Kop legend', who used to go to Liverpool home and away games in the 80s.

Jaffa is understood to have frequented the away train specials and Liverpool's numerous trips to Anfield South, Wembley.

Kab Hakim said he and Jaffa used to stand together in the Kop in the 80s.

Writing on Facebook Kab said: "I remember Jaffa well.

"He always used to stand on the crash barriers in the centre of the Kop in the 80s trying to get fans to sing."

Graham Foster said Jaffa stood out because of his brown suit and his ginger hair.

Graham added: "He was awesome."

It was not uncommon for shouts of "Jaffa Jaffa" to rain down from the Reds faithful as Gary Williams remembers.

He said: "My first memory of Anfield was the crowd singing, 'Jaffa Jaffa give us a wave, Jaffa give us a wave'.

"And Jaffa standing on the barriers, big ginger afro and big grin on his face waving to everyone. Good memory."

Ken Jermyn remembers when Jaffa stopped going to Liverpool games to take up running instead.

Ken said: "For about 10 years you would see him in the Kop and at all away days.

"Poor old Jaffa. He just stood out with his redish orange hair. Always had his Liverpool scarf on. Sung 'Jaffa Jaffa' at many away games along with most fans back in the day. He was a liked man."

Despite being almost penniless, Jaffa has never signed on the dole, while friend Stephen McCarthy also said he doesn’t have any drug, alcohol, or mental health issues

Liverpool FC's official charity, the LFC Foundation, has also stepped in to donate £1,000 to his cause.

The charity wrote: "Being part of Liverpool Football Club means being part of the greatest football family in the world. We look out for each other, and particularly those who are in need. YNWA We are Liverpool. This Means More."
