Jadon Sancho struck in face by object thrown during Dortmund vs Schalke derby

England winger Jadon Sancho was struck in the face by an object thrown from visiting fans during Saturday's fierce Bundesliga derby clash between Borussia Dortmund and Schalke.

Teenage star Sancho - who turned 19 last month - started the game at the Westfalenstadion, and celebrated with teammates when Mario Gotze headed home his intelligent pass for the hosts in the 14th minute.

Gotze ran in front of the visiting Schalke fans to celebrate, and when his teammates surrounded him a white object thrown from the stands struck Sancho on the right hand side of the face, causing him to need medical attention from Dortmund's medical staff before he returned the the pitch.

The Revierderby clash resumed following a brief break in play, with Schalke soon turning turning the game around to lead 2-1 courtesy of a Daniel Caligiuri penalty and a strike from Salif Sane.

Sancho's assist for Gotze's goal was his 14th in the Bundesliga this season, the most by an English player in one of Europe's top five leagues since Frank Lampard amassed 14 for Chelsea in the Premier League in 2009/10.
