Jadon Sancho showed what Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura must do for Spurs to beat RB Leipzig

When Tottenham were drawn against Red Bull Leipzig in the round of 16 of the Champions League, there was a fair amount of optimism from the Spurs supporters.

The club had avoided the likes of Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus in the draw for the first knockout round which was seen as a huge positive.

But Leipzig should not be underestimated.

Spurs were torn apart by Bayern Munich in the group stages - a team currently fifth in the Bundesliga table topped by Leipzig.

Alasdair Gold's verdict on Tottenham vs RB Leipzig

There will be plenty of Tottenham eyes on Leipzig matches between now and February, when the two teams meet, first at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and then at the Red Bull Arena.

Leipzig were involved in a top of the table clash away at Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night and there were interested Spurs eyes on the clash just a day after the two teams were paired together in the Champions League.

The match ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw, with Leipzig coming from 2-0 and 3-2 down to secure a share of the spoils at Signal Iduna Park.

In a post on Reddit entitled 'Anyone else watching the RB Leipzig/Dortmund game right now? Seems like a good opportunity to see how we might matchup against them in February?' there were a plethora of replies from Spurs fans.

User kctmo said: "Seriously...I don't find Leipzig to be playing particularly well but Dortmund have just made big mistakes in this second half and Leipzig have capitalised nicely."

That led to The-Weekdays saying: "Yikes that sounds like something we would do."

Then a number of fans focused in on the players that Tottenham could struggle to deal with.

Black_Trebek said: "They definitely look pretty sloppy in possession at the moment. [Yussuf] Poulsen and [Timo] Werner will always be hard to deal with if they get good delivery.

"Leipzig appear to be playing a very compact 4-3-3 with a very high line defensively. [Jadon] Sancho and [Achraf] Hakimi have done well to use their pace to create chances. Leipzig have been on the back foot for most of the game so far but have pressed well and defended just about well enough on crosses and set pieces. Their keeper [Peter] Gulasci is making some good saves."

User the suspicious crab then said: "Werner looks really pacey. I think it really depends on how we line up and try to nullify strengths. Poulsen has been nullified by the physicality of [Dan-Axel] Zagadou and Werner was matched by the speed of [Manuel] Akanji, I think we can accomplish similar things."

CocoLamela then moved on to who would be important for Spurs when the two teams meet.

hey said: "I think Lucas [Moura] and  [Alli] will be particularly important for our match against Liepzig. Their defense (sic) looks well organized, but not particularly adept at recovering once they've been broken. We will need those individual moments of skill to break their line and get in behind."
