Jadon Sancho's Ed Woodward request and subsequent response show Man Utd have made right decision

Jadon Sancho made a request to Marcus Rashford last summer to tell Ed Woodward to cough up the cash and pay his asking price.

It came during the transfer window of 2020 where Manchester United had an intense interest in the England international.

However, Borussia Dortmund were in no mood to negotiate and told the Red Devils that his price was £109m or nothing.

That was wildly out of United's valuations and a move failed to materialise.

A year on, and Sancho looks set to finally join his dream club after seeing a transfer fall through - agreeing a five-year contract until 2026 with the Old Trafford outfit.

According to the Athletic, Rashford was jokingly asked by Sancho to tell Woodward to pay the money last year.

But the fact that a transfer never went through yet the youngster continued his professional attitude at Dortmund speaks volumes.

BVB CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke confirmed the news on Thursday: "We reached a general agreement with Manchester United on the transfer of Jadon Sancho, pending full completion, as there are still some formalities to agree on and the medical check to be completed.

“At the end of the day, this is done explicitly at Jadon's request. We would have liked to keep him.

“But he behaved fantastic and was superb in the second half of the season. It makes a difference whether someone communicates this clearly or goes on strike."

Dortmund have had history of players kicking up a fuss until they got a move away, including Ousmane Dembele and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

But Sancho's reaction to a big-money move being turned down only seemed to spur him on more

And despite a tricky start to the season, the Englishman finished the season with 16 goals and 20 assists.

He also scored twice in the DFB-Pokal Cup final against RB Leipzig.

It proves that United have got themselves a gem of a player, who is not only a hard worker but a remarkable talent.

The Red Devils can be accused of signing the wrong type of character in the past.

But the signing of Sancho can earmark a new era for the club where they bring in players who will do everything for the badge.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already lined up a number of transfers in the coming weeks as United plan to splash the cash.

Raphael Varane, Declan Rice, Leon Goretzka and Eduardo Camavinga are also on their shortlist.
