Jadon Sancho at risk of being left behind as Chelsea interest wanes and Dortmund send message

Is Jadon Sancho at risk of being left behind in this most unusual summer?

Rewind back a couple of months and the south Londoner was the headline target for many of Europe's top clubs.

Chelsea, towards the front of a long queue, liked what they were seeing but the pursuits of Timo Werner and Kai Havertz in recent weeks have ultimately proven instructive.

Deloitte predicts Premier League clubs will lose £1bn revenue this season

For all of Sancho's supreme talents, Borussia Dortmund's reported asking price of about £120million is just too high in a time of such uncertainty as most clubs continue to take a wait-and-see approach.

There is now a growing possibility that he remains in Germany's industrial heartland for another season.

That should not exactly be considered a massive blow seeing as Dortmund's young squad is among the most exciting on the continent and likely to make another developmental leap with an attack spearheaded by Erling Haaland.

But it is a lot different to what had been expected before the coronavirus pandemic struck and a far different scenario to when he appeared to fall out with Lucien Favre, Dortmund's head coach, earlier in the season.

With Chelsea's interest trained elsewhere, that previously long queue of potential suitors has rapidly dwindled.

Manchester United remain interested but Ed Woodward, their executive vice-chairman, has warned against big spending because of the uncertainty brought on by the pandemic.

Liverpool would be keen but they were also unwilling to meet Werner's £53million release clause when he was set on linking up with Jurgen Klopp.

Instead the most likely outcome is another campaign in the Bundesliga, where Sancho has already established himself as one of the biggest stars thanks to 17 league goals and 16 assists this season.

Should he make another leap, however, that transfer fee could climb even higher.
