Jadeveon Clowney knew Texans were trading him two weeks before Week 1

Pro Bowl defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is no longer a member of the Houston Texans. When did he know that would happen?

The now-Seattle Seahawk joined Ian Rapoport’s podcast on Wednesday, “RapSheet and Friends,” to discuss the matter.

Rapoport asked Clowney when he might have had a sense that he might be going somewhere else and not staying in Houston.

“Probably like two weeks before the season started,” Clowney said. “I thought I was going to be there, then the next call was to get ready to in for training camp, like two weeks before, and Bill O’Brien was like, ‘we’re trading you.'”

Clowney didn’t sign his franchise tag after being told the Texans were trading him, as he didn’t know where his next NFL home would be.

“I was like, oh, okay, well, I’m going to hold off on signing now, because I don’t know where I’m going to get traded to,” Clowney explained. “Because he was like, ‘we don’t know where we are going to send you yet.'”

Ultimately, Houston shipped Clowney off to Seattle on Aug. 31 when the Texans, and all other 31 teams, had to trim their training camp rosters down to a mandatory 53-man roster. The Texans got back outside linebackers Jacob Martin and Barkevious Mingo and a 2020 third-round selection.

The two sides have managed well without one another. Texans are 3-2, tied for ninth in the NFL in quarterback sacks, tied for 16th with 22 tackles for loss, and are tied for the 13th-most takeaways with seven. Clowney has generated 1.0 sack, two tackles for loss, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, three pass breakups, and even returned an interception for a touchdown in his five games for Seattle, four of which he has started. Seattle has a 4-1 record and is in the thick of things in a highly competitive NFC West.
