Jadeveon Clowney contract: Texans to pay portion of salary in 2019

The Houston Texans will be paying Jadeveon Clowney to play for the Seattle Seahawks this year.

What?

The Seahawks won the offseason when they traded Barkevious Mingo, Jacob Martin and a 2020 third-round draft pick to the Texans on Saturday for Clowney, a Pro Bowl pass rusher.

But the deal is actually even better than that. The Seahawks and the Texans are going to split Clowney’s pay this season, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“Capper to Saturday’s trade: Houston paid Jadeveon Clowney a $7 million signing bonus while Seattle is paying the remaining $8 million of his salary, per source,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted Sunday morning. “Seattle also promised not to tag Clowney after this season, per source.”

Talk about a steal for Seattle and a whopper of a deal for Clowney, who can now look ahead to 2020 free agency – should he not eventually come to a long-term agreement with the Seahawks – without the worries of a tag.

With Houston now paying Clowney to play in Seattle this year, it’s tough to argue general manager John Schneider didn’t just pull off the trade of his lifetime.
