Jaden Smith: People don't 'get' gender norms

Jaden Smith has suggested people do not “get” gender norms and claims he doesn’t see clothes in terms of male or female categories.

Smith was championed as a “non-binary icon” after appearing in Louis Vuitton’s women’s wear campaign. Speaking to GQ, the 17-year-old said the only distinction he saw between clothes were the attitudes of the wearer.

“I don’t see man clothes and woman clothes,” he said. “I feel like people are kind of confused about gender norms. I feel like people don’t really get it. I’m not saying that I get it. I’m just saying that I’ve never seen any distinction. I don’t see man clothes and woman clothes, I just see scared people and comfortable people.”

His Louis Vuitton campaign certainly caught the nation’s attention and promoted the growing dialogue about gender fluidity, highlighting his influence. The actor and model was not shy about addressing this sway when asked about his relationship with the Kardashian family.

“I think I’m just a really big influence on anybody that I’m around, and I feel like that’s why it’s good for me to hang out with all types of different people."
