Jade Thirlwall and Miguel Almiron among celebrities who shared heartwarming Christmas messages

North East celebrities sent excited and heartwarming messages to their fans on Christmas Day.

Famous famous from the world of TV, music and football spread Christmas wishes and festive cheer to their online followers.

They also shared pictures of how they were celebrating, whether at home with family or out socialising.

For the ninth year in a row, South Shields comedian Sarah Millican launched #joinin - a way for those on Twitter who are feeling lonely on Christmas Day to message each other.

She explained: "So, #joinin works like this. If you’re alone (and would rather not be) or feeling lonely, follow the hashtag #joinin and start chatting with others there."

Also spreading the joy at Christmas was former Geordie Shore star Vicky Pattison.

The reality TV star, who won I'm A Celebrity in 2015, said she had spent Christmas Eve in Barluga in Gosforth.

Referencing the famous line in the film Home Alone, she messaged on Instagram: "Happy Christmas you filthy animals!!!!"

She added: "Such a gorgeous night in Barluga Gosforth with my beautiful buddies and boyfriend- now it’s back to mine for a night of baileys, Christmas films and cuddles with my family and friends.

"I feel so blessed to be surrounded by the wonderful people that I am! Sending love, light, positivity to you all!!! And I hope Santa spoils you all rotten!!!"

Another ex-Geordie Shore housemate said he was looking forward to seeing his two-year-old son Chester's face this Christmas.

He tweeted: "Merry Xmas everyone have an amazing day."

The girls from Little Mix , including South Shields natives Perrie Edwards and Jade Thirlwall, tweeted: "Merry Christmas, we hope you have the most special day. Love the girls x".

Jade also tweeted a picture of her and her family wearing matching cute matching Christmas pyjamas with "Christmas at the Thirlwalls" printed on the t-shirts.

X Factor winner Joe McElderry, from South Shields, wrote: "Merry Christmas to you all! Thinking of a wonderful year of love you have given me and sending it back to you all! Have a lovely day all."

Newcastle United player Miguel Almiron wished his followers "Feliz navidad para todos" or "Merry Christmas everybody".

He posed with teammate Federico Fernandez with their families in front of the Christmas tree.

Newcastle football fans looking forward to the Boxing Day match against Manchester United were sent a message by Newcastle United FC.

Their official account tweeted: "Merry Christmas to all NUFC supporters around the world - wherever you may be. Have a wonderful day and we'll see you tomorrow!"

And Sunderland AFC said to the Black Cats supporters: "A Merry Christmas to SAFC fans around the world!"
