Actress and Baltimore native Jada Pinkett Smith has been vocal about her relationship with the late rapper Tupac Shakur for years _ most recently, to set the record straight about what she considers inaccuracies the recent Shakur biopic "All Eyez on Me."
But Wednesday, Pinkett Smith revealed a new tidbit about her friendship with Shakur, with whom she attended Baltimore School for the Arts.
On the radio show "Sway in the Morning," Pinkett Smith told DJ Sway Calloway that she was a drug dealer when she met Shakur.
"It's kind of hard because I haven't really told the whole story. One of the things that's very interesting that I've never really said is that when I met 'Pac ... I was a drug dealer," she said.
"That's how we started, then as I was coming out, something very bad happened to me. As I was coming out of the life (of a drug dealer), he was going more into the life."
The actress, who was on the show promoting her latest movie "Girls Trip" (in theaters Friday), made sure not to reveal too much because she said she plans to write a book, but added that the relationship between her and Shakur was based on survival.
"I know that most people want to always connect it in this romance thing, and that's just because they don't have the story. But it was based in survival, how we held each other down. ... When you have somebody that has your back when you feel like you're nothing, that's everything," she said.
Pinkett said she and Shakur decided not to share their full story, but she felt sharing that she was a drug dealer was important "because it gives more insight into who we were."
