Jacuzzi raiders steal 10 hot-tubs worth £50k near Edinburgh using trucks and crane

Police are hunting a gang after 10 hot-tubs worth £50,000 were stolen from a company near Edinburgh.

The jacuzzis were taken from the Advanced Hot Tubs and Swim Spas yard in Macmerry, near Tranent, overnight.

The well-organised crooks used two flatbed trucks and a small crane to make off with the huge spas that each weigh 450kg.

They also broke in to a neighbouring builders yard and stole a forklift to help with the massive haul.

Company boss Kevin Higginson issued a plea to help track down the spas on Twitter.

Mr Higginson told The Daily Record: “This is a lot of equipment to shift. The gang used one flatbed and a hi-ab lorry with a lifting crane to take everything.

“They broke into a neighbouring builders merchant and stole a forklift that they also used in the robbery. They seemed to know exactly what they were after.”

Mr Higginson said that his yard on the Macmerry Industrial Estate was widely covered by CCTV cameras.

He added: “We’ll be going through all the footage to get a good description of the gang and their lorries. Hopefully someone will have seen something that they remember and can let the police know.”

Mr Higginson confirmed that 10 of his best selling Harris hot tubs were stolen.

The six-person spas retail for just under £5,000 each and are equipped with dozens of jets, LED lighting and a bluetooth music system.

He added: “The worst thing about this theft is that each one of the tubs had been sold and was about to be shipped to customers in time for Christmas.

“The sale of spas has been on the rise through the lockdown as they bring so much joy and so many benefits to people when they are stuck at home.

“It’s the customers I really feel sorry for.”

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Officers were advised at 1.30am on Saturday following reports of the theft of hot-tubs from a yard in Macmerry.

"The hot-tubs were worth a five-figure sum.

"Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing."
