Jacqui Smith 'won't be watching' Prince George cartoon amid concerns for royal child

Jacqui Smith has said she will not be watching the new satirical cartoon series The Prince.

The former Home Secretary was speaking on Good Morning Britain on Friday with presenters Alex Beresford and Charlotte Hawkins when she revealed her concerns regarding the animated series which centres on eight-year-old Prince George of Cambridge and the Royal Family.

However, the portrayal of Prince George and his siblings Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have been considered inappropriate due to their age by some royal fans.

On GMB on Friday, Charlotte asked Jacqui: “Do you think it’s fair game because it’s comedy or do you think because they’re royal children, you know, they don’t really have a say in it?”

Jacqui Smith admitted her concerns for Prince George over he new series The Prince (ITV)

“They’re just children,” noted Alex Beresford.

“They’re just children,” agreed Jacqui.

The former Home Secretary then said: “I’m not going to watch it, myself.

“And I think there is something, whoever the child is, there is something about children that we should attempt to protect and so I feel a little uncomfortable about it.”

However, Jacqui’s fellow guest and broadcaster Iain Dale was less enthused by the debate surrounding concerns for the royal children.

“Give a damn,” expressed Iain bluntly.

Charlotte asked: “You don’t care one way or the other?”

Iain responded: “Well, from that snippet it looked completely harmless. I can’t get excited about people being depicted in a cartoon.

“We can’t lose our senses of humour over this. There’s a theatre in Coventry Street at the moment that’s got The Windsors playing from that TV series with Harry Enfield.

However, Jacqui's fellow guest Iain Dale (right) was less bothered by the issue (ITV)

"I think royal children feature in that. Are we saying theatre productions shouldn’t be able to do that? No.”

Later in the show, Alex Beresford said “children are children” and called to protect them.

*Good Morning Britain airs on weekday mornings from 6am to 9am on ITV with past episodes on ITV Hub. The Prince is being released on HBO Max in the US.
