Jacqui Lambie's departure from Parliament could be imminent

Jacqui Lambie is urgently checking if she is a British citizen by descent.

Colourful Tasmanian senator Jacqui Lambie has been foreshadowing her departure from federal politics, telling Senate colleagues she is scrambling to check whether she is a British citizen by descent.

Senator Lambie has been dragged into Canberra's citizenship saga after last week revealing her father was born in Scotland.

The ABC understands Senator Lambie has been telling her colleagues that she may have to join the seven other federal politicians who have departed Parliament House during the citizenship crisis.

She is making urgent inquiries with the UK Home Office about her status, and hopes to know the outcome within the next 24 hours.

Last week, the Tasmanian told the ABC she was satisfied she had "no concerns" about being a dual citizen because of her father.

"His father, my grandfather, came to Australia to enlist in the Army in fact," she said in a statement.

"As far as I'm concerned all their affairs are in order, as are mine.

"A citizenship audit of all parliamentarians will clear the air once and for all which is why I'm supporting such a move 100 per cent."

The ABC asked whether Senator Lambie or her father had renounced any rights to British citizenship, which were not addressed.

Senator Lambie's office has been contacted for comment.
