Jacob Umaga red card video dubbed 'incredibly harsh' as Wasps overthrow European champions Toulouse

Not even a controversial Jacob Umaga red card in Wasps v Toulouse was enough to prevent the hosts from overthrowing the European champions.

But it has caused plenty of debate, both on the incident and consistency in decision-making.

Wasps full-back Umaga, 23, was given his marching ordered at 33 minutes for a high shot on Toulouse scrum-half Martin Page Relo in Saturday's Champions Cup encounter.

Umaga - the nephew of former All Blacks captain Tana Umaga - was sent off six minutes before half-time for his challenge on the No. 9, with referee Chris Busby stating there was head-to-head contact and no mitigation.

As he went to wrap with his arms, the side of Umaga's head connected with the jaw of Relo, who was being tackled from behind by Charlie Atkinson.

It was his second red card in two matches, but the setback failed to douse Wasps' fire as they continued to lead 14-10 at half time on the basis of converted forward tries from Biyi Alo and Brad Shields.

Busby told the player: "It's upright tackle, it's clear head-to-head contact. There's no mitigation for me. It's a red card."

Umaga looked stunned with the decision and was clearly disappointed as he exited the field.

When challenged by Wasps No. 7 Brad Shields, the official replied: "It's not a discussion."

However Busby, overseeing his first match in the competition, was able to find mitigation when visiting No. 8 Anthony Jelonch floored Wasps' Alfie Barbeary with a shoulder to the head. It resulted in just a yellow card.

Against the odds, Lee Blackett's Wasps went on to beat Toulouse 30-22 to keep alive their hopes of reaching the knockout phases of the competition.

Channel 4's co-commentator described it as "incredibly harsh".

Jack Willis, appearing as a pundit, said of the Umaga red card: "I feel for Jacob, to be honest with you. There was no real intent there, there's mitigation, the player's falling.

"We were bringing a lot of intent and playing some really good rugby."

Injured Wasps skipper Joe Launchbury told Channel 4: "Jacob's pretty unlucky, he's just come back from a two-week ban. To get that straight away after, you could see when he was coming off he's absolutely gutted. But obviously there was contact with the head."

Lee McKenzie, presenting Channel 4's coverage of the game, said: "For me, that's a yellow card not a red. I personally think there is mitigation, I think Jacob Umaga's body height is low."

Wasps boss Lee Blackett said post-match: "We’ll look at ourselves. We’ve got to lower our height. It’s difficult when people are changing direction but we’ve got to make sure we look at our height.

"As long as we lower our height we don’t bring in the interpretation of the referee. For the second incident (involving Jelonch), it looked aggressive.

"Without listening to what the referee said I can see why he would give yellow because there was probably a fraction of mitigation with him going down, but it could easily have been red."

Man of the match Alfie Barbeary said after the final whistle: "We knew we had to front up, and we came out and did that.

"A few decisions didn't go our way, going down to 14 early, but we stuck it out and I'm just so proud of the boys."
