Jacob Stockdale on listening to old school rock, his childhood heroes and Ireland's World Cup hopes

Jacob Stockdale has revealed some of the secrets behind his success on the rugby pitch.

And it includes listening to veteran rockers ZZ Top.

We caught up with the Ulster and Ireland star as he was unveiled as Maxol's first-ever brand ambassador in Dublin on Tuesday morning.

We delved into the career of the 23-year-old in a quick Q&A session to see what makes Stockdale tick.

From his pre-match rituals to the players he looked up to as a kid, here's what we found out:

Any pre-match rituals?

There are various things I do to get into the right mental state before a match. Things that get me into match mode. I listen to music on my headphones, I tape up my wrists and write some messages on them, and I also take three jumps when I run onto the pitch. Don't ask me why. It is just something I do. The messages I write on my wrist tape would be family related.

What music gets you fired up?

I am sort of old school. I listen to AC/DC, ZZ Top and Aerosmith - old school rock like that. I find that works better than some of the modern day stuff. I sound old here!

Favourite away ground?

That's a tough one. I think the most impressive is the Stade de France. It's a phenomenal stadium and atmosphere.

Most hostile ground to play in?

I think any time you play one of your Interpro rivals, the atmosphere is always special. Places like Thomond Park, the RDS. I'd actually say the Sportsground is probably the most hostile, but that's what you want as a player. It fires you up.

Which players did you look up to as a kid?

They won't like me for saying this, but I always looked up to Tommy (Bowe) and Trimby (Andrew Trimble) when I was growing up. They were superstars to me.

Which former player do you wish you could have played with?

I always liked David Humphreys. He was a brilliant player and someone I believe would have taught me a lot. Also Jared Payne. I played a couple of games alongside Jared, but I would love to have played a couple of seasons in the same team as him.

Toughest opponent?

The Australian winger Marika Koroibete is a bundle of absolute energy. He is so tough to contain.

Favourite try you scored?

I suppose it has to be the one against New Zealand. That's probably the most obvious answer, but it was a special moment.

Which player should fans be keeping an eye out for?

Mike Lowry is a great talent. He is such an exciting player and I expect him to absolutely tear it up for Ulster and Ireland in the future. He is seriously good.

How do you reflect on last season?

I suppose mixed emotions. Obviously it was a good season as far as the team was concerned. Nobody expected us to do as well as we did. But we don't want to settle for second best or being the 'nearly men'. As a team we want to go all the way and win trophies. We don't want to fall at the final hurdle. So it was disappointing to come up short in that respect. But we have made some really good signings to bolster the core squad we have here. So hopefully things are looking bright for the furture.

What are you hopes for the future?

Short-term goals would be to do well at the World Cup later this year. Long-term would include winning 100 caps for Ulster and going on a Lions tour.

Speaking of the World Cup, what would your message be to fans?

Just that we are going out there to win it. There is no point going into a tournament not believing you can go all the way. We know how tough it is going to be. But we don't want to just reach the quarter-finals or semi-finals, we are heading to Japan with the intention of winning the World Cup. We have a lot of hard work between now and then, but we can't wait.
