Jacob Rees-Mogg launches unprecedented attack on Commons Speaker John Bercow

Jacob Rees-Mogg has launched an unprecedented attack on Commons Speaker John Bercow.

And he praised Nigel Farage from the stage of the Conservative Party Conference.

Mogg, a member of Boris Johnson's cabinet and Leader of the House of Commons, said Bercow had "damaged the standing of the house in the eyes of the British public to its lowest point in modern history."

Conventionally, it's rare for cabinet ministers to publicly criticise the Speaker.

But the arch-Brexiteer let rip during his speech to party faithful during the annual gathering in Manchester.

As he raised the speaker's name there were murmurs of disapproval in the audience at the Manchester Central conference centre.

But Mogg said:"No listen, listen. I'm actually going to be nice about him.

"As a parliamentarian I have been and in many ways remain a fan of the speaker.

"He has helped MPs hold the government to account. And to seek redress of grievance.

"But in my view he has flown too close to the sun and I hope that as he comes to his retirement he will not allow the good he has done in his earlier years to be forgotten.

"But his recent mistakes have to my deepest regret as leader of the house of commons damaged the standing of the house in the eyes of the British public to its lowest point in modern history."

Earlier in his address, he described Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage as "in many ways admirable."

But he warned: "We must not delude ourselves into thinking that a vote for the Brexit Party does anything other than increase the risk of Brexit being cancelled altogether."
