Jacob Rees-Mogg is given a job in the cabinet by Boris Johnson

Jacob Rees-Mogg has been given a cabinet job by Boris Johnson.

The pro-Brexit MP has been made Leader of the House of Commons. That role, previously held by Andrea Leadsom, involves organising government business and making a weekly statement announcing the business for the week ahead.

He is also Lord President of the Council.

Mr Rees-Mogg is chairman of the European Research Group, who are hardline Brexiteers.

New Prime Minister Mr Johnson axed huge numbers of Theresa May's cabinet on his first day in the role on Wednesday.

Other key figures, including David Lidington and Philip Hammond quit before they could be sacked by Mr Johnson. In total more than half of Mrs May's outgoing cabinet lost their ministerial posts in the changeover.

Mr Rees-Mogg was described as the leading figure within the unsuccessful effort for a vote of no confidence in Theresa May as party leader by the parliamentary Conservative Party in December but continued to call for her resignation.

In her last set of questions to the Commons, Mr Rees-Mogg admitted he and Mrs May hadn’t seen "eye-to-eye" but thanked her for her "remarkable public service", "sense of duty" and "willingness to deal with people" even if they were "annoying".
