Jacob Rees-Mogg hits out at 'silly' Kate Garraway in awkward ITV Good Morning Britain interview

Jacob Rees-Mogg hit back at Kate Garraway today during an awkward interview.

The Conservative MP was on Good Morning Britain to speak about the prospect of Boris Johnson becoming the next prime minister this week, after Conservative members finish voting today.

Mr Rees-Mogg said he’s not holding his breath for a job in the Cabinet but said “of course I’ll do it” if asked.

He said: “I’m not holding my breath. I’m very happy representing North East Somerset.

"This is about what’s in the national interest, nothing to do with me, it’s about leaving the European Union on the 31st October and having the right person to do that.

"I’ll do anything I can to support Boris Johnson, I think he’s the right choice for the country and will do an excellent job as Prime Minister. If he wants me to do something, of course I’ll do it.”

Of reports he’d be considered for treasury, he said: “You’re very flattering, but these will be decisions for Boris and not for me. I will serve Boris in any way he wants me to.”

But when asked about his tweet about the England World Cup cricket win, in which he said we don’t need the EU to be victorious, despite the multicultural make-up of the team, the interview took a turn.

Jacob said: “It was a little joke that wound up Lefties and I’m sorry that Lefties have no sense of humour.

"It was a little joke. I think you’re over-analysing it. Of course I knew that [captain] Mr Morgan is an Irishman.

"He’s chosen to play for England, he therefore plays as an Englishman.

“You’re over analysing this. It was a little joke. The Left don’t find humour at all funny ever.

"It’s just ridiculous over-analysing of a little quip. Frankly I think you’re just being silly, I don’t think this is a point at all."
