Jacob Rees-Mogg handed government job as Boris Johnson builds right-wing cabinet

Jacob Rees-Mogg has been handed a senior government job by Boris Johnson as the new PM assembles the most right-wing Cabinet since the 1980s.

The hardline Brexiteer was summoned to Number 10 this evening, where he was offered the plum role of Leader of the House of Commons.

The fusty, posh old-Etonian who once took his nanny out on the campaign trail, has been chairman of the European Research Group of hardline Brexiteer Tories - and a frequent thorn in the side of Theresa May .

More than half of Mrs May's cabinet - 17 out of 30 - were either sacked or resigned in the new PM's brutal reshuffle.

Right-wing Tories Sajid Javid, Priti Patel and Dominic Raab were ushered in as Chancellor, Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary respectively.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock and DWP chief Amber Rudd kept their jobs after swallowing their pride - and principles - to offer some support for Mr Johnson.

And disgraced former Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson returned as Education Secretary despite having to resign over a national security leak (which he denied).
