Jacob Murphy ready to accept challenge of second chance at Newcastle United

Jacob Murphy has indicated he is ready to accept the challenge of fighting for his future at Newcastle United.

The winger - who is wanted by Sheffield Wednesday on loan - scored the winning goal in the friendly over Barnsley from the penalty spot.

After the game first team coach Steve Agnew said that Murphy, a boyhood United fan, can be "around it" at Newcastle this season.

Murphy declared: "I want to show everybody what I'm about.

"I thought that (the penalty) was a great opportunity to get on the scoresheet and put down a marker. I feel that given the opportunity I can show what I have got.

"So far in pre-season I am showing what I am about.

"For me it is about putting in good performances just to give the manager a headache."

Murphy should also have had a goal in the second half when he was played in by Miguel Almiron only for a handball on the line to deny him and no penalty awarded.

But Murphy seemed content with life back at United.

Murphy told NUFC TV: "I am pleased with how things are going this pre-season and hopefully I can keep putting in good performances on the pitch.

"Last season was an amazing season for me. I really got into my rhythm and gained confidence and I think I have shown that again here.

"I want to keep the confidence high and keep on putting in the performances. I have been working hard on my confidence.

"I won the penalty and I was the one who wanted to step up and take it. It has grown a lot and I think I have shown that in my performances."

"I do well when I get a run of games under my belt like I did at Sheff Wed. Here I feel like I am building on it."
