Jacob Murphy on Rangers wanted list as Steven Gerrard keeps tabs on Newcastle winger

Rangers are keeping close tabs on
Newcastle winger Jacob Murphy.

MailSport
understands the 24-year-old is on a list of potential Ibrox targets should boss
Steven Gerrard move players on during the transfer
window.

A deal for Murphy, who has just one year left on his Magpies contract, is some way off but
Gerrard is an admirer of the wideman who was signed by former Toon gaffer Rafa Benitez for £12million in 2017.

Murphy has spent the last season-and-a-half on loan in the English Championship at both West Brom then
Sheffield Wednesday.

He scored nine goals in 44 appearances for the Owls last term.

Murphy hasn’t given up hope of getting back into Steve Bruce’s side in the Premier League but Newcastle are open to offers for the former Norwich City star.

A wide player ISN’T a priority for Gerrard, as he looks to add a central midfielder to his Gers squad. But if he can shift fringe men like Jordan Jones, Jamie Murphy, Brandon Barker or Greg Stewart, it could prompt a move for Murphy.

The potential
stumbling block to a deal could be the bad blood between Rangers and St James’ Park owner Mike Ashley
over his previous
involvement at Ibrox.

Meanwhile, Greg Docherty’s prospective switch to Hull City was still some way off – with a fee yet to be agreed between the clubs.

The midfielder was given permission to speak to the Tigers who are keen on the 23-year-old after their relegation to League One.

But MailSport
understands Docherty has yet to decide whether he’s keen on a move to Humberside.
