Jacob deGrom is finally getting paid.
No, the Mets have not stepped up and signed the National League Cy Young winner to a multi-year extension as many of their fans are calling for them to do.
But they did make him an offer he could not refuse. DeGrom accepted the Mets offer of $17 million for 2019 on Friday, avoiding arbitration, according to a source.
It is a significant raise from his 2018 salary of $7.4 million.
If anyone deserved such a pay bump, however, it was deGrom. The only draw for a miserable team in 2018, he claimed the Cy Young despite having just 10 wins.
It is the largest raise in arbitration history, just edging out Mookie Betts' $9.5 million raise from the Red Sox earlier Friday.
A team source said they are still hopeful they will be able to work out a long-term extension with the right-hander.
