Jacob Bridgeman sets early pace at 121st U.S. Amateur

Jacob Bridgeman had six birdies and an eagle and opened with a 63 at the 121st U.S. Amateur Monday.

The oldest U.S. Golf Association championship got underway Monday at two courses: Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, and Longue Vue Club in nearby Verona. Bridgeman played the Longue Vue course which means he will tackle Oakmont on Tuesday.

There are three golfers one back of Bridgeman: Joe Highsmith, Mark Goetz and Alex Fizpatrick, who all shots 64s.

Cole Sherwood posted the best Monday score at Oakmont, a 1-under 69, which leaves him T-33 after 18 holes. Sherwood had the only score under par at Oakmont Monday. Parker Coody shot even par at Oakmont. Those are the only two golfers in the top 60 after Day 1 to play Oakmont.

The field of 312 golfers will play 18 holes of stroke play at each course over the first two days before the field is cut to 64 and seeded for the match-play bracket, which starts on Wednesday. All the matches will be held at Oakmont.
