Jaclyn Symes sworn in to replace Jill Hennessy as Victorian Attorney-General

Labor's leader in the Victorian Upper House, Jaclyn Symes, has been sworn in as the state's new Attorney-General following Jill Hennessy's shock resignation last week.

Ms Symes was previously minister for agriculture, regional development and resources.

Under a small reshuffle announced by Premier Daniel Andrews, Ms Symes will retain the resources portfolio while the other two will be taken over by new Cabinet minister Mary-Anne Thomas.

The reshuffle was triggered last Wednesday when Ms Hennessy announced she was stepping down from the ministry to spend more time with her teenage daughters as they go through high school.

Ms Hennessy's decision to leave the front bench was supported by the Premier.

Before entering Parliament in 2014, Ms Symes worked as an adviser to former attorney-general Rob Hulls and was Mr Andrews' legal and justice adviser when he was opposition leader.

"Not only does Jaclyn have the necessary skills and background, she has a fierce commitment to carry on the work of reforming our justice system that I know makes her right for this role," Mr Andrews said in a statement.

Mr Andrews has avoided a wider reshuffle with little appetite for further moves following several reshuffles this year. Six ministers have either retired, resigned or been sacked.

Ms Thomas represents the regional electorate of Macedon and has been Cabinet Secretary for four years. She has been replaced in that role by Carrum MP Sonya Kilkenny.

"Since her election in 2014, Mary-Anne has been an unwavering voice for the people of her community — and people in regional communities across our state," Mr Andrews said.

Ms Thomas was elected unopposed by the socialist Left faction to fill Ms Hennessy's Cabinet vacancy.

The Premier has also made a few changes to the parliamentary secretary team including promoting former Ambulance Employees Association secretary Steve McGhie to Parliamentary Secretary for Health.
