Jackpot for reaching the Premier League now '£182m' but VAR won't help in Championship play-off final if Robins make it - report

Bristol City can take a huge step towards the Championship play-off positions on Tuesday if they can overcome Tony Pulis' out-of-form Middlesbrough side.

A win would keep alive supporters' dreams of making the top six and staying in the hunt for promotion.

A promotion that is now said to be worth a whopping £180m to the lucky beneficiaries.

The Times reported yesterday  that financial analysts have come up with the huge figure for the three sides who go up, which might yet include Bristol City if a play-off berth is won before victories through the play-offs.

TV deals and parachute payments

The figure is broken down to £96m from guaranteed money from the current TV deals.

And then a further £86m in parachute payments - handed out even if one of the three promoted teams goes up but is then immediately relegated.

It is those parachute payments that create such discrepancy in budget across the English second tier and shows the good job City are doing steadily climbing the leagues currently.

No VAR

However, if the Robins are able to build on the fine victory against Sheffield United at the weekend, finish in the top six and make the Championship play-off final then any in-match decisions in 'football's richest game' will not be reviewed.

The respected broadsheet says that the EFL has ruled out using Video Assistant Referees (VAR) for the May 27 final.

There then remains the possibility that such a bounty of riches could be won by a club benefiting from a dodgy refereeing decision.

Old school it may be, but we suppose that is the game as it stands.

Should City make it there, then they may need the rub of the green, anyhow, given their inconsistent form at times this campaign.
