Jackknifed lorry closes road in both directions

A jackknifed lorry closed a main road in both directions.

Merseyside Police rushed to Tower Road in Birkenhead at around 8.15pm on Monday following reports of a lorry completely blocking the carriageway. Once at the scene officers found the vehicle had jackknifed and completely blocked the road near Dock Road.

Officers closed Dock Road in both directions while they dealt with the incident near Birkenhead Ferry Terminal. At least two police cars were seen blocking the road and telling other drivers to take an alternative route.

Traffic monitoring service, INRIX, confirmed the road was closed. An alert from the service read: "A554 Tower Road in both directions closed due to jackknifed lorry near A5139 Dock Road."

By 9.30pm the lorry was moved onto the correct side of the road, but the carriageway was still blocked by police cars. Due to the time of the incident taking place, no traffic was affected.

Merseyside Police were approached for comment.
