An 18-year-old junior national representative has become the Tasmania JackJumpers' inaugural signing ahead of their entry into the NBL next season.

Sejr Deans, who has represented the island state in Under 16s, 18s, and 20s teams, has inked a development contract for the 2021/22 campaign.

He also represented Australia at Under 15 and 17 level and was a member of the Under 19 national squad.

"We are committed to developing young Tasmanian talent," JackJumpers coach Scott Roth said on Wednesday.

"Sejr is a great example of a player who has come through local junior ranks and thoroughly deserves his opportunity at the professional level.

"This is an important moment for the JackJumpers and the first of many exciting player announcements over the coming months."

Deans, who will play in the NBL1 South season this year with Tasmania's North-West Thunder, said he was thrilled to be the JackJumpers' first signing.

"It is a great thing for young players like myself that there is now a pathway into the NBL and I think this will inspire a lot of other young athletes in the state," he said.

The JackJumpers were announced as the league's 10th team last July.
