Jackie Weaver really could have no authority as Handforth Parish Council 'to be scrapped'

A parish council that sparked an internet sensation when a live meeting descended into anarchy could now be abolished, it has emerged.

The clip of a shambolic Handforth Parish Council meeting in which insults were thrown about and members were kicked out was widely shared earlier this month.

Clerk Jackie Weaver became an unlikely star when footage of her booting three members out of the meeting, including the chairman, was viewed millions of times.

The council's newfound fame led to a further meeting of around 80 people attending a Zoom call, with thousands also watching via YouTube last week.

Now, it has emerged that the future of Handforth Parish Council is in doubt as it faces a boundary review, which means Handforth and nearby Wilmslow councils are to merge, reports Cheshire Live.

The review, which was started before the infamous ‘Jackie Weaver’ clip went viral, was published last week.

It proposes a raft of boundary changes, including the merger of the Wilmslow and Handforth parishes into one larger authority.

The report said: “The new [Clay Lane and Sagars Road] development is adjacent to the existing Handforth settlement area and so will form part of the wider community of Wilmslow — Handforth.

“It is therefore proposed that this area should be transferred from the parish of Styal to the proposed enlarged parish of Wilmslow, which the Borough Council also proposes to include the existing parish of Handforth.

“Cheshire East Council considers that there will be merit in merging the existing parish of Handforth with the parish of Wilmslow as, to all intents and purposes, they form a single community."

It's not yet known when the final decision will be made.

Clerk Jackie Weaver became an internet sensation as a result of the initial chaotic Zoom meeting, which was held on December 10 to discuss local planning and environment issues.

Ms Weaver, from the Cheshire Association of Local Councils, was told to "stop talking" and "you have no authority here" during anarchic scenes which saw the chairman kicked out.

In response, Ms Weaver removed Brian Tolver from the call and placed him in a virtual waiting room.

Celebrities including Richard Osman and Steph McGovern were among those sharing the link to the video recording of the meeting, which received widespread media attention.
