Jack Wilshere Rangers claim queried as former Arsenal star sent 'everything to prove' warning

Former Leeds United star Noel Whelan is unconvinced over claims Jack Wilshere would become Scottish football's best if he joined Rangers.

Barcelona icon Xavi told Record Sport that the former Arsenal standout would be the pick of the bunch after being linked with a switch to Ibrox.

The former England star knows Rangers boss Steven Gerrard well from their international days but admitted over the weekend that a move to Spain and Italy appeals to him.

But Whelan believes Wilshere still has a lot to prove after being released by West Ham following two injury-plagued years at the London Stadium.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “I do not believe he would be the best player in Scotland.

“He has a lot to prove yet. He has been missing for a number of years.

“I forgot he was at West Ham until somebody told me! He is a forgotten man right now.

“Years ago he was a great player, but is he now? There is a lot to prove. He is starting again and rebuilding his career because he has been a missing man for too long. He has suffered from injuries and a lack of form.

“He could be a great player in Scotland but I am not sure if he has the fitness in his body to produce that.”
