Jack Wilshere gives assessment of Unai Emery's first season in charge at Arsenal

Jack Wilshere claims Arsenal have had a 'good' season despite missing out on the Premier League top four.

The Gunners suffered a late collapse as they were all but beaten to the final Champions League spots by Chelsea and Tottenham following a run of just one win in their last six games.

Spurs lead Arsenal by three points going into Sunday's trip to Burnley , but need an unlikely eight-goal swing to leapfrog their rivals.

However, Unai Emery's men are in the semi-finals of the Europa League and take a 3-1 lead to Valencia for this week's second leg.

Wilshere, who left the Emirates for West Ham 12 months ago, believes Emery has had a solid first season at the helm.

Piers Morgan slams PATHETIC Arsenal and bemoans "biggest bottle job in Premier League history"

He said: "[ Arsenal ] obviously had a few opportunities to cement their place in there, but it wasn’t to be.

"But they’ve still got the Europa League, and that’s another way in if they don’t get in via the top four.

"But I think they’ve had a good year. I think they’ll be happy, the fans will be happy, and hopefully they can win the Europa League and end with a trophy."

Arsenal fans are furious with what Brighton's Yves Bissouma did after Emirates draw

Wilshere has made just four Premier League starts for West Ham after having his debut campaign at the London Stadium disrupted by injuries.

He added to Sky Sports: "It’s been tough, it’s been frustrating. To pick up an injury was frustrating, but I know better than anyone what it takes to come back, and I’ve worked hard to come back and obviously got some more minutes at the weekend.

"I’m just taking it step-by-step, looking forward to each game as it comes. I wanted to come back before the end of the season just for my head and my confidence and to prove that I can come back."
