Jack Wilshere delivers honest verdict on next Arsenal captain amid Aubameyang struggles

Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has had his say on his old side's captaincy struggles.

The club announced on Tuesday that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had been relieved of his captaincy duties following disciplinary issues that had seen him miss out against Southampton last weekend.

The Gabon international was then left out of the squad for Wednesday night's 2-0 win against West Ham United, with head coach Mikel Arteta also confirming on Friday that he would not face Leeds United today.

Now, Hale End academy graduate Wilshere has had his say on the situation, hailing French forward Alexandre Lacazette's leadership qualities whilst claiming that the former Lyon frontman should definitely be in consideration for the armband.

Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: “I don’t think you have to be that vocal. Do you have to be that vocal now to be a captain?

“There are different types of captains where you lead with the way you play. Lacazette was different class (against West Ham). He would be a contender.”

Lacazette wore the armband against the Hammers as Arsenal delivered a convincing performance, securing all three points with a 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium.

Goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Emile Smith Rowe helped the Gunners leapfrog their opponents into fourth place - the first time they have been in the coveted UEFA Champions League spots in 14 months.

The north London outfit will hope they can continue their fine form this weekend as they travel to Elland Road to face relegation-threatened Leeds United.
