Jack Wilshere dealt deadline day transfer blow as he faces spending season without club

Jack Wilshere is currently a free agent and is training with Serie B side Como, but he will not be able to join the Italian club due to regulations as a result of Brexit and no longer holding an EU passport.

The former Arsenal and West Ham midfielder is seeking a new club after his contract with Championship club Bournemouth expired at the end of last season.

Wilshere has travelled to Italy to train with Como, who were promoted to Serie B this season and are looking to recruit to their squad but Wilshere’s passport situation may prevent a deal.

Due to new Brexit regulations, the process for British players finding clubs in the EU has encountered a new hurdle with Como not currently in a position to sign non-EU players.

Wilshere has been training with the Italian side to maintain his fitness ahead of this campaign but he has so far been frustrated in his search for a new club.

The 29-year-old did not have his contract renewed at the Cherries this summer despite helping them to finish in the playoff zone last season, where they were ousted by Brentford in the semi-finals.

Wilshere made 17 appearances for the South Coast club - including 11 matches in the starting XI - but he featured in just nine minutes of the two playoff games against the Bees.

Wilshere said on his future, speaking to talkSPORT earlier in August: “I've actually had a good pre-season. I've been training with a club just to keep myself fit. I'm in a good place, physically. I'm 29.

“I'm waiting for the right opportunity to come up, to be honest.

“But, having said that, nothing has come up at the minute and there's nothing happening. I don't know the answer to that question to be honest.

“I'm just waiting. I don't really know how long I can wait.

“I don't really want to wait as long as I did last time when I left West Ham in the summer, and then I didn't get a club until January when I went to Bournemouth.”

Wigan chairman Talal Al Hammad tweeted last week: “You are most welcome to join us @LaticsOfficial #Believe”

The next steps for Wilshere remain unclear, although free agents are allowed to be signed by clubs outside of transfer windows.

Wilshere made 197 first-team appearances for Arsenal between 2008 and 2018, before he joined West Ham, but injuries have stalled his career.
