Jack Whitehall's girlfriend Roxy Horner 'left unable to talk' as blood sugar plummeted

Jack Whitehall’s girlfriend Roxy Horner has opened up about a terrifying health ordeal she suffered after being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

The 30-year-old model has praised her boyfriend, 30, for helping her cope with her diagnosis.

The cause of Type 1 diabetes is unknown but the condition can have severe health consequences if undiagnosed or untreated.

Roxy has opened up for the first time about her diagnosis and explained that a friend had to make an emergency phone call two weeks ago when she lost her ability to speak while they were out for dinner as her blood sugar levels nosedived.

Opening up to The Sun on Sunday about her health battle, and her boyfriend’s support, Roxy said: “Jack’s been my absolute rock, he’s so lovely.

“He was there when I got diagnosed. My parents and my family live in Australia, so he has been my family. We’re amazing.”

“I felt extremely tired and exhausted for a long time, I had no energy. I couldn’t even go for a walk, it was draining, I felt like I was dying. I was drinking four to eight litres of water a day."

Roxy went on to explain that she just knew something was wrong but that doctors failed to test her for diabetes as she didn't meet the usual criteria for being such a patient.

She eventually went to A&E when she started developing memory loss and this is when doctors made the shock discovery that she was suffering from Type 1 diabetes.

She also says a friend had to call an ambulance while they were out for dinner during a terrifying health scare caused by the condition.

She said: “It was out of nowhere. My sugar levels went down really low and I couldn’t get them back up, I couldn’t even talk to her to communicate, it was scary.”

The NHS states: "Type 1 diabetes causes the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood to become too high.

"It happens when your body cannot produce enough of a hormone called insulin, which controls blood glucose."

Those who suffer with the condition are required to inject themselves with insulin, while symptoms include being thirsty, experiencing blurred vision and feeling excessively tired, among other symptoms.

Pop singer Nick Jonas, potential Bond actor James Norton, and former Prime Minister Theresa May have discussed how living with Type 1 diabetes has not held them back in the past.

However the long-term risks of living with high blood sugar levels without treatment can include the kidneys being damaged, as well as damage to the heart, eyes and feet.

Having been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes herself and gaining treatment, Roxy says she wants to use her platform as a model to highlight the condition to spread awareness and information about treatment.
