Former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Jack Sherman has died aged 64.
The band announced Sherman's death in an Instagram post on Friday, which hailed the musician as "unique".
A statement read: “We of the RHCP family would like to wish Jack Sherman smooth sailing into the worlds beyond, for he has passed.
“Jack played on our debut album as well as our first tour of the USA.
“He was a unique dude and we thank him for all times good, bad and in between. Peace on the boogie platform.”
Mr Sherman, who replaced Hillel Slovak on the 1983 debut album and later Freaky Styley, is believed to have died on August 18.
The cause of his death has yet to be confirmed.
Mr Sherman was not included when the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. This was officially because he was not a current or founder member.
He told Billboard at the time: "I’m being dishonored, and it sucks."
After leaving the Red Hot Chili Peppers he continued playing and was featured on albums by Bob Dylan, Feargal Sharkey and Tonio K among others.
