A Blantyre shop has been helping families in need by providing shopping bags full of essentials.
In partnership with Blantyre Miners’ Welfare, Jack’s of Blantyre have left bags of food for anyone in the area struggling to make ends meet and who may find it difficult to go to a foodbank.
Shop owner and Blantyre councillor Mo Razzaq wanted to do something for his community and said: “At the shop, we’ve made up bags of essentials for struggling families.
“They are being left at Blantyre Miners’ Welfare so people can collect them without judgement.”
The bags contain things like bread, fruit and vegetables and have been put together after staff heard some struggling families weren’t going to the local foodbank for help.

Posting on Facebook, they said: “Jack’s of Blantyre have left bags of food in the smoking shelter outside Blantyre Miners’ Welfare Club.
“Please pick one bag up and give others a chance for these goods.
“We will be doing this regularly every week.
“We have been donating food and have found that some feel embarrassed coming forward.
“This way the donation is anonymous to families in need.
“Huge thank you to Blantyre Miners’ Welfare Club for all their help.”
The Subway in Jack’s are also taking part in the Takeaway Alliance scheme which aims to stop children from going hungry.
Any school age child can go in and ask if their Auntie Trisha is in to get a free meal, no questions asked.
