Jack Russell miraculously survives 40ft fall from cliffs near Seaton Sluice

A dog had to be rescued by the coastguard after falling 40ft down a cliff in Northumberland.

George, the 11-year-old Jack Russell, miraculously escaped with only minor injuries following the horror fall on Monday afternoon.

At around 1.45pm, HM Coastguard paged the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade and Blyth Coastguard Rescue Team to the scene roughly halfway between Hartley Bay and Collywell Bay, to the south of Seaton Sluice.

Brigade members arrived on scene and made contact with the owner who explained that he could see the dog on rocks below and that he appeared to have avoided serious injury.

They then safely escorted the owner onto the rocks and found George, before carefully approaching him - making sure that they did not frighten him away and towards further danger.

Once with George, his owner confirmed that he appeared to be largely okay and he was placed in an animal rescue bag and carried back off the rocks.

A spokesman for the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade said: "George’s owner later contacted the Brigade to thank us for helping him and confirmed that the dog was in reasonable health, save for a few minor injuries.

"This was the 4th dog that has fallen over cliffs in the vicinity of Hartley and Collywell Bay this year and required assistance from the Brigade & Blyth CRT – with at least one of the animals sadly passing away.

"We would encourage owners to keep their dogs on leads when near cliff edges and, as the owner did in this case, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard should your dog end up in a place of danger."
