Jack Ross warns Sunderland have no time to enjoy victory with confident Rotherham United next

Having had a fortnight to stew on their first defeat of the season, Sunderland were given barely any time at all to reflect on their victorious response before focusing on Tuesday’s visit of Rotherham United.

The Black Cats put their 3-0 loss at Peterborough United behind them with a 3-1 win at Accrington Stanley.

Like Sunderland, Rotherham came from behind to win at the weekend, hammering Bolton Wanderers 6-1. And Ross says he is looking forward to facing the Millers on home turf.

“Such is the pleasure of football that you don’t really get chance to enjoy winning a game before your attention turns to the next one,” said Ross. “We were back in (training) on Sunday, when all the work started for Tuesday’s game.

“But it’s a good game in our stadium and our record has been good there in the last season and a bit so it’s one to look forward to.”

The Black Cats only lost once at home in the league last season, whereas until Saturday, all three of Rotherham’s victories this term had come away from the New York Stadium.

Victory kept the Wearsiders in the play-off positions, two points behind leaders Coventry City and four ahead of Paul Warne’s side, who have played a game less. They have, though, only played seven of their 46 matches.

“I think it won’t be until after ten games that it really starts to settle,” Ross said of the league table. “By the end of September, we will start to see a bit of shape to it.

“We are pleased with where we are, even if we would like to be in an even better position.”

Sunderland's victory was secured by goals from Lynden Gooch, Aiden McGeady and Marc McNulty after Jordan Clark had given the hosts the lead in the fifth minute.
